Report:PARKEY’S MATCH REPORT

CHAPEL A 1 v PONTEFRACT 1 (home)

5. CAMERON WARD lost to DANNY BRAY 0-3.
Cameron and Bray looked to be quite tight on paper, both players enjoying taking the ball early and playing at pace. The first was pretty crucial with Bray just having one or two more answers and sneaking it 11-9. This knocked the wind out of Cam’s sails a little as he got a little anxious, trying to find the easy way through, which caused a few unnecessary errors to occur. In the third, Cam played better again, was tactically more astute, and had a genuine chance of getting back in the match. Credit to Bray though, who just wouldn’t allow that to happen, producing some nice winners and flicks when he needed them, taking it the third 11-8.

4. JAMES WILKINSON beat BEN BEACHILL 3-0.
James seems to thrive on these match nights and is always lively and ready to go, and tonight was no exception. It has to be pointed out that tonight, without me playing of course, the average age of the ten players was about 12. This is also because Ponte had two 15 year olds (and very good ones) in their side, one of whom is Beachill. And this match for James looked like a potential banana skin as Beachill has very good technique and court awareness. James played well though from the off, as did Beachill, but unfortunately, at 9-7 to James in the first, Beachill went to catch the ball and James accidentally hit the shot, which included Beachill’s forearm in it! Beachill was never the same after this, but all credit to him, he played out the whole match with James taking it in 3.

3. MATTY POWELL lost to DENNIS GILEVSKIY 0-3.
Matty would tell you he got absolutely “smashed” by a 15 year old which kind of did and didn’t happen. Firstly, Gilevskiy, the Irish U17 no1, is one of the best 15 year olds in the world and built like an adult. And secondly, Matty was pretty close really, especially in the first. Most rallies were well contested but Gilevskiy was a little more controlled , perhaps playing the more correct shots at the right time. The junior also had a couple of holds at the front which made Matty do a lot of work and allowed Gilevskiy to win 9, 6 and 5.

2. OWAIN TAYLOR lost to LEWIS DOUGHTY 1-3.
These two played in this fixture last season and Owain had one or two injury problems so tonight he was looking to correct the result. In the first Owain was the more accurate, playing good simple squash as Doughty made a few strange errors, 11-6 to Owain. On the return to the court, Doughty looked galvanised, and from thereon in looked like a completely different player. This took Owain out of his comfort zone a little and he didn’t seem able to adjust quickly enough to the increase in form from his opponent, and the second game went to Doughty 11-4. In the third and fourth, Owain did pick up his game again, hitting through a bit more positively, but it was Doughty who just managed to play the big points a little better, taking them both 11-9, 11-8.

1. RICHIE FALLOWS lost to PATRICK ROONEY 2-1 (retired)
A decent sized Chapel A YPL crowd welcomed World no50 Richie Fallows in for his debut against the in form World no75 Rooney. There were a few jokes between the two in the pre match warm up but it was Rooney who settled into the match more easily. After some long rallies early on, it looked like it was going to be a long night, but a few unforced errors from Fallows allowed Rooney to take the first 11-3. Richie perhaps wasn’t quite ready to go but in the second he made up for that playing with much more precision, making the court bigger and forcing Rooney to do some work. Rooney though, has won 2 PSA events recently and has turned himself into an athlete, and doesn’t seemed to be phased anymore by brutal rallies. Rooney had quite a decent lead in the third, but Richie hung on, saving some game balls, and took it to a thrilling tie-break which Rooney just edged 13-11. Unfortunately in the fourth Richie was suffering with some severe cramp in his playing arm shoulder and had to retire, effectively losing 11-0.

All in all, not the result we wanted, but there was some highly entertaining squash on display which the crowd thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated. Great to see……

Next home match is Barnsley on Wednesday November 6th 7.30pm.
