It was a nail-biting night in round six of the Yorkshire Premier League as all five matches went the distance - and amidst the drama, Doncaster retained top spot.
The league leaders were up against fourth-placed Harrogate on Wednesday night. Early on, Donny's England star Asia Harris beat John Simpson in a tough three-setter while Gabriel Cox won a gruelling five-game affair for Harrogate on the adjacent court to level the match.
It was Lewis Doughty and Joel Arscott up next for the hosts and they both won in handsome style to bag the five bonus points. Stuart MacGregor clawed back three consolation points for Harrogate by conquering trick shot king Will Salter in four at top string.
That 17-6 victory stretched Doncaster's lead at the top to 10 points as Dunnington went down 16-8 at 2022 champions Queens.
This one went down to the final match thanks to wins for Dunnington stalwarts Matthew Stephenson and Michael Andrews at Nos. 5 and 2 respectively and middle order wins for the Halifax hosts by renowned coach Josh Taylor and Northern Irishman Stephen Hearst.
Queens needn't have worried about the outcome. Playing the decider for them was British Junior Open champion Finnlay Withington who took care of Pakistan's Amaad Fareed in straight games to send Queens above Dunnington into second place.
At the bottom, newly-promoted Ferriby Hall are still seeking their first win but came close against a patched-up Pontefract 1, who were without their club captain Matt Godson for a Yorkshire League game for the first time in eight years! Tom Bamford and Adam Taylor were also away playing in the Italian Cup for Bologna.
Ferriby Hall got points on the board straight away as No.5 Glyn Saunders beat Billy Hawes in four games, but Stuart Hargreaves soon levelled matters by sweeping aside home captain Mike Reid in three.
Yusef Forster just about got past an ill Ben Beachill 11/9 in the fifth to give Ferriby the edge, but Ponte debutant Omar El Torkey proved to be an instant hit as the Egyptian thrashed Ben Sockett in the blink of an eye to set up a match decider.
Ponte brought out their big gun for this one - none other than former world No.1 James Willstrop, who is now club coach. He conquered South African national champion Diewald Van Niekirk in straight games to seal the bonus points and put Ponte fifth.
Elsewhere, the was a mid-table steel city derby as defending champions Hallamshire beat Abbeydale 17-9 - and this also went down to a decider won by a former world No.1!
Hayden Tetley and Phil Scully silenced the home crowd with lower-order victories for Abbeydale, but the hosts roared back through Adam Turner, who won in three, and Matt Gregory, who won a four-game lung-burster with Mutahir Ali Shah.
That laid the platform for three-time Commonwealth Games champion Nick Matthew to take centre stage on home turf, but he found world No.145 Elliot Morris Devred a tough nut to crack. It was an absolute thriller, with 43-year-old Matthew taking it 11-7 in the fifth.
The night's other encounter saw Pontefract 2 just about get the better of second-bottom Woodfield - and once again it went right to the death.
At fifth string, former club champion Jack Cooper made a trimphant return after leaving Pontefract for college in the US many years ago. He toppled Woodfield's last-minute stand-in Mike Tomlinson with minimal fuss. Ponte's Joe Royle was also rapid in beating Polly Clark on the next door court.
But back came Woodfield, with Egyptian Adam El Shazly beating youngster Chester Dockray and Jamie Carmichael profiting from Connor Sheen's ankle injury.
That levelled matters heading into the top string tete-a-tete between New Zealand's Mason Smales and Egypt's Mohamed Elshamy. Smales took it in straight games to lift Ponte 2 to seventh place and away from immediate danger at the bottom.
