Doncaster reignite Yorkshire title race
06 Nov 2025

Doncaster brought in their big guns and blew leaders Pontefract 1 away to reignite the title race in round six of the Yorkshire Premier League.

Doncaster, title winners in 2023/24, showed their determination to win back the crown from defending champions Ponte by fielding new signing from Hallamshire, Nick Wall, plus world no.58 Simon Herbert and newly-crowned British junior champion Dylan Roberts.

The night began with Doncaster's Joel Arscott taking down Adam Taylor in four and away skipper David Turner beating an injury-hampered Tom Bamford in straight games.

Doncaster no.3 Roberts, who won the U19 title at the British Junior Championships in Sheffield last weekend, was clearly full of confidence in his straight-games win over Ben Hetherington.

Ponte 1 at least had Sam Todd back at no.1 after a brilliant recent spell in America on the PSA Tour which has catapulted him up to 52 in the world, but he was no match for Doncaster debutant Wall who won 11/5 11/5 12/10.

Herbert applied the finishing touch and rounded off a dominant 20-3 win for the visitors by defeating Ponte's Aussie import Brad Fullick in five games.

That result means Pontefract 1 and Doncaster are now level on 80 points at the top, just three points ahead of Dunnington who have played a game more.

Dunnington kept the pressure on the top two by beating mid-table Cleethorpes 18-6 at home.

The York club fielded two debutants, 21-year-old Charles Keeble and Egypt's women's world no.150 Jana Safy, who won the Czech Open only last week. Keeble was a 3-0 victor against Harry Falconer and Safy beat Oscar Hill in a five-game thriller.

Lower down the order, stalwarts Taminder Gata Aura and Matthew Stephenson posted earlier wins for the hosts, with Cleethorpes' Charlie Jubbs earning what proved to be a consolation.

A tricky week at Hallamshire ended with a resounding 20-3 defeat at fourth-placed Harrogate, kickstarted by early wins for Josh Rowley, Isaac Green and Gabriel Cox.

Former England international Chris Simpson was made to work hard by Welsh youngster Oliver Jones for a five-game victory, but Harrogate no.1 Rhys Evans beat Kiwi Temwa Chileshe briskly to maintain his 100% record for the season and complete the whitewash.

Pontefract 2's home fixture with Queens was postponed until December. The Halifax side, whose club is still bein refurbished after a fire in April, are currently bottom of the pile by eight points from Ferriby Hall.
